Gospel Sungura musician Sylvia Kandira, popularly known by her stage name Queen Sy, is steadily carving a place for herself in the country’s gospel music industry through faith-inspired songs that seek to uplift and encourage listeners.
The Gutu-born musician, who hails from Dungiro Village, says her passion for gospel music was nurtured from childhood in a Christian family where attending church was a way of life. She was an active member of her church’s praise and worship team, an experience she credits with strengthening her musical foundation.
Queen Sy said listening to established Zimbabwean gospel musicians further inspired her to pursue a recording career, eventually leading her into the studio in 2023.
Her debut album, Musakanganwe Kutenda, was released in 2023 and features five tracks: Anouya Mutsvene among others. The project introduced her message of faith, thanksgiving and spiritual encouragement.
Building on that foundation, she released her second album, Ndinoona Nyasha, in 2025. The six-track album includes Ndinoona Nyasha, Mabasa Anoitwa naMwari featuring Pastor Trymore Bande, Kana Nguva Yakwana, Munamato Wangu, Moyo Wakanaka featuring Allan Chimbetu and Dzangova Ndangariro.
Queen Sy said collaborations with established musicians have helped broaden her musical reach while allowing her to share messages of hope with a wider audience.
Despite her progress, the emerging artist says financial constraints continue to limit her growth. She noted that inadequate resources make it difficult to organize live performances and raise funds for studio recording, slowing down her ambitions to expand her ministry through music.
“I wish to grow further in my music career, but lack of financial resources remains one of the biggest challenges. It affects our ability to stage shows and sometimes even to raise money for studio recording,” she said.
Beyond music, Queen Sy enjoys listening to music and acting in drama productions. She draws inspiration from gospel musicians Rumbi Zvirikuzhe, Olinda Marowa, Mai Charamba and Pastor Trymore Bande, whom she regards as her role models.
Her music is available on YouTube, Facebook and TikTok under the name Sylvia Kandira Music, where listeners can access both audio releases and official music videos. Her latest releases continue to build a growing online audience as she works towards establishing herself among Zimbabwe’s emerging gospel Sungura artists.
