Thousands of horse racing enthusiasts, music lovers and socialites thronged Borrowdale Park Racecourse in Harare over the weekend for the 2026 Castle Tankard, an annual event that once again combined elite racing, entertainment and lifestyle experiences.
The headline moment of the day came on the track where Pocket Watch galloped to victory in the country’s premier horse racing competition, handing trainer Thomas Mason his third Castle Tankard title. The South African-ridden horse, guided by jockey Malesela Katjedi, outpaced a competitive field to claim the US$25 000 winner’s prize in the main race of the day.
This year’s edition featured six races, attracting some of the finest thoroughbreds and racing connections from across the region. The Castle Tankard remains Zimbabwe’s richest and most prestigious horse racing event, and the atmosphere at Borrowdale reflected its growing popularity among both sports fans and families.

Days before the racing action, Delta Corporation, under its Castle Lager banner, used the occasion to make a social impact announcement after donating 100 hospital beds to health institutions across Zimbabwe. The gesture was welcomed by many people who praised the company for combining entertainment with corporate social responsibility.

Fans at the racecourse were also treated to a full festival experience. Delta Beverages created tasting points where patrons sampled different beverages from the company’s wide product range throughout the day.
For those looking to relax between races and performances, braai stations and designated chilling zones were set up across the venue. Organisers also introduced a recovery and rest area for revellers who needed time to regain composure after drinking.
Families were not left out, as a dedicated children’s play zone provided games and entertainment tailored for younger attendees, turning the event into a family-friendly outing.
Fashion also became one of the standout attractions of the Castle Tankard. Guests, particularly in the VIP section, embraced the event’s glamorous atmosphere with elegant formal wear dominated by red and black outfits. Stylish dresses, tailored suits and designer accessories added colour and sophistication to the race day experience.

Entertainment continued after the races with musicians taking to the stage. Progress Chipfumo, backed by Wanai, opened the live performances shortly after the prize-giving ceremony for the winning horse.
Dancehall star Jah Master ignited excitement among younger fans as crowds sang and danced along to his hit songs. Madedido, Ndunge Yut and several emerging dancehall performers also kept the energy levels high before the main act took over.
Veteran musician Alick Macheso and Orchestra Mberikwazvo closed the night with a polished performance that capped off another memorable edition of the Castle Tankard.
