Zimbabwean contemporary artist Portia Zvavahera has set a new personal auction record after her painting This is where I travelled  sold for £307,200 (approximately US$406,200) at Christie’s in London on October 14, 2026.

The sale marks another significant milestone for the internationally recognised artist, whose distinctive paintings explore dreams, Christian faith, spirituality and personal experiences through vibrant colours, intricate patterns and dreamlike imagery.

The 2020 painting fetched more than four times its pre-sale estimate, reflecting strong demand for Zvavahera’s work in the international art market.

The result surpassed her previous auction record of US$355,600, achieved in New York in 2023, reinforcing her growing presence in the global contemporary art scene.

Zvavahera’s artistic practice is deeply personal, often drawing on dreams and spiritual encounters that she translates into expressive compositions. Her use of layered patterns, bold colours and abstracted figures creates immersive works that explore the relationship between the physical and spiritual worlds.

Her latest achievement has also attracted congratulatory messages celebrating the growing international recognition of Zimbabwean creative talent.

One message celebrating the milestone described the achievement as a source of national pride, noting that Zvavahera’s success demonstrates that Zimbabwean artists can compete at the highest levels of their professions globally.

The message also called for greater recognition of Zimbabwean achievements, emphasising the importance of celebrating the work of fellow citizens when they excel on the international stage.

Despite establishing a new personal auction benchmark, Zvavahera remains behind fellow Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai-Violet Hwami in the contest for the highest auction price achieved by a Zimbabwean woman artist.

Nevertheless, the Christie’s sale represents a notable achievement for Zvavahera and adds to the visibility of Zimbabwean women in the international art market.

The growing commercial recognition of African contemporary art has created greater opportunities for artists whose work reflects personal histories, cultural experiences and spiritual perspectives. Zvavahera’s latest result places her distinctive artistic vision firmly in the spotlight.

Her record-breaking sale underscores the international market’s appreciation of her work and offers another moment to celebrate Zimbabwean creativity on the global stage.
