“A Trap of Trade” is a poignant exploration of the complex challenges facing teenage girls in Zimbabwe. The film follows the story of Sarah, a 15-year-old girl, who finds herself caught between the devastating choice of abortion and marrying JB, an aspiring politician.
Produced by Praise Nkala of Zizou Movie Pictures, the film sheds vital light on the pressing issues of teen pregnancy, unsafe abortions, child marriage, and the lack of access to comprehensive sex education and reproductive healthcare. These intertwined problems continue to severely impact the lives of young women in Zimbabwe, where gender-based violence and patriarchal norms place immense pressures on vulnerable adolescents.
Through Sarah’s harrowing journey, the film highlights the dire consequences of denying young people the right to make informed decisions about their own bodies and futures. Forced to navigate a web of social, cultural, and political constraints, Sarah’s plight reflects the experiences of countless girls across the country who are denied basic freedoms and autonomy.
Importantly, “A Trap of Trade” also underscores the direct link between these gendered issues and the alarmingly high rates of domestic violence in Zimbabwe. The film illustrates how the systemic disempowerment of women and girls, coupled with harmful gender stereotypes, create an environment rife with abuse and exploitation.
By bringing these critical topics to the forefront, Zizou Motion Pictures’ production serves as a powerful call to action. “A Trap of Trade” challenges audiences to confront the harsh realities faced by Zimbabwean youth and demands urgent policy changes and social reforms to protect the rights and wellbeing of women and girls.
Through its raw and emotive storytelling, the film promises to ignite meaningful discourse and inspire tangible progress in addressing the interconnected crises of teen pregnancy, unsafe abortions, child marriage, and gender-based violence in Zimbabwe.
