130 years not out: Celebrating Bulawayo’s rich heritage

Bulawayo -Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, recently marked a significant milestone – its 130th anniversary. The city celebrated this historic occasion with a vibrant array of activities as part of the annual Culture Month festivities.

Bulawayo was established in 1894 as the capital of the Matabeleland region. The city was founded by King Lobengula, the last king of the Ndebele people, and was named after the nearby Bulawayo hill. Over the years, Bulawayo has evolved into a thriving economic and cultural hub, serving as an important center of industry, commerce, and tourism in Zimbabwe.

To commemorate 130 years of existence, Bulawayo hosted a diverse range of events and activities throughout the city:  A grand parade featuring traditional dancers, musicians, and cultural troupes showcasing the city’s rich heritage,an arts and crafts exhibition highlighting the work of local artisans and showcasing the city’s vibrant creative scene.
A series of historical lectures and panel discussions led by renowned historians and cultural experts, exploring Bulawayo’s pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s history as well as cultural food festivals and street parties celebrating the city’s diverse culinary traditions signified the value of the anniversary

Musical concerts and performances featuring both traditional and contemporary Zimbabwean artists and Sports tournaments and recreational activities promoting community engagement and wellness formed part the celebratory itinerary.

“Bulawayo has been the beating heart of Zimbabwe’s cultural and economic landscape for the past 130 years,” said Bulawayo Mayor, Hon. David Coltart. “As we celebrate this milestone, we are proud to showcase the resilience, creativity, and diversity that have made Bulawayo the vibrant city it is today. These celebrations are a testament to the enduring spirit of our people and our unwavering commitment to preserving and celebrating our heritage.”

Prominent historian Phathisa Nyathi echoed same sentiments, stating, “Bulawayo’s 130-year history is a testament to the adaptability and perseverance of its people. From its founding as the capital of the Ndebele Kingdom to its evolution as a bustling industrial and commercial center, Bulawayo has continuously reinvented itself while remaining true to its cultural roots. These celebrations are a fitting tribute to the city’s enduring legacy and its importance in shaping the narrative of Zimbabwe’s history.”

Bulawayo’s 130th anniversary celebrations were a vibrant and meaningful tribute to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. Through a diverse range of activities and events, the people of Bulawayo came together to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a future filled with continued growth, innovation, and community spirit
