The United States Embassy in Harare hosted a landmark reception to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, in a celebration themed around the American county fair tradition.
The event, held on Thursday, June 4, brought together a cross-section of Zimbabwean public life, government leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society representatives, academics, and alumni of U.S. exchange programs. At its center was an expression of shared values and a call for deeper economic partnership between the two nations.
The Guest of Honor, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe, Hon. Dr. Anxious Masuka, joined U.S. Ambassador Pamela M. Tremont for the occasion.
In her address, Ambassador Tremont drew on the origins of the American republic to frame the significance of the occasion.
“In 1776, our founders gathered in Philadelphia. They were mostly farmers, merchants, and everyday people who believed in something bigger than themselves. They believed in an idea — that ordinary people could govern themselves, that freedom and opportunity should belong to everyone.”
The Ambassador turned to the bilateral relationship, stressing that the commemorations were as much about the future as the past. She called for increased American investment in Zimbabwe and expanded access for Zimbabwean businesses to American markets and global supply chains.
“Both our countries value innovation and entrepreneurship. We want to see American companies investing here. We want to see Zimbabwean companies accessing American markets and global supply chains. We want both our peoples to benefit from stronger economic ties.”
The county fair format, which is a staple of American community life for more than two centuries, was chosen to reflect values that the Ambassador argued resonate equally in Zimbabwe. Hard work, neighborliness, self-reliance, and community spirit, she said, are qualities that define everyday life in both countries.
“I think the term ubuntu describes the county fair vibe perfectly.”
Minister Masuka welcomed the spirit of the event, commending the continued engagement between the two governments and calling for broader collaboration to attract investment, deepen bilateral cooperation, and advance shared prosperity.
The Harare reception forms part of a year-long series of global events marking America’s semi qui centennial. Similar celebrations are being held at U.S. diplomatic posts worldwide throughout 2026. The event was made possible through contributions from American companies and brands with operations in Zimbabwe, a detail the Embassy highlighted as itself symbolic of the commercial relationship it seeks to strengthen.
