A new wave of hope is sweeping through the Arcadia community in Harare following the official opening of the Rerawo Project Soup Kitchen, an initiative aimed at empowering vulnerable women and children through nourishment, care, and opportunity.

What began as a modest effort to feed just 20 students has rapidly grown into a lifeline for many. By the end of the month, the soup kitchen is set to serve 100 high school and primary school students, along with 50 adults facing homelessness and substance misuse. The expansion reflects the scale of need and the community’s response to the initiative.

At its core, the Rerawo Project is driven by a mission to bridge critical gaps in society by providing holistic support. Beyond meals, the organisation focuses on improving access to education, healthcare, mentorship, and skills development, key pillars that contribute to long-term empowerment.

“Our vision is a flourishing community where women and children have access to the opportunities, knowledge, and resources necessary to lead healthy, fulfilling lives while embodying the love and compassion of Christ,” said Rerawo Project Director, Anesu Madzamba.

Located within the Arcadia Social Services Center, the soup kitchen primarily supports learners from nearby Morgan High School and Moffat Primary School. However, its impact stretches far beyond food provision. The space has become an entry point for identifying students in need of educational support, psychosocial assistance, and mentorship, while also creating employment opportunities for women within the community.

The transformation has been visible and heartfelt. Once a quiet center, the facility now comes alive twice a week with laughter and anticipation as children gather for meals every Monday and Wednesday during lunch hour.

“Seeing the smiles on their faces is everything,” said Ms Juru, a resident social organiser and social worker at Arcadia Social Services. “It’s more than just food, it’s dignity, care, and a sense of belonging.”

Looking ahead, the Rerawo Project is not slowing down. Plans are already underway to introduce additional programmes focusing on health initiatives, skills training, and educational support for women and children across Harare. These efforts aim to create sustainable change and uplift entire households .Arcadia Community

To support the initiative, the organisation has launched its first fundraiser. Community members and well-wishers are encouraged to donate here and help expand the reach of the programme. Supporters can also follow and engage with the project’s journey via their social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram.

As the Rerawo Project continues to grow, its message remains clear: meaningful change begins with simple acts of compassion. Through every meal served, the initiative is not only addressing hunger but also building a stronger, more empowered community—one life at a time.
