A strong message about the human side of healthcare emerged during the fifth annual Doctor Appreciation Old School themed dinner hosted by The Avenues Clinic, where patient stories took centre stage in showing the value of compassionate medical care.

The annual gathering, now in its fifth year, has grown into a tradition that recognizes the dedication of doctors while strengthening the bond between patients, healthcare professionals and the institution. This year’s event placed special emphasis on patient experiences, offering a perspective that organisers said best reflects the true impact of medical care.

The prestigious clinic’s general manager Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu noted that the initiative was born out of a simple desire to acknowledge the commitment of doctors whose work often goes unnoticed despite its life-changing impact. She pointed out that appreciation from patients carries a special particular meaning because it reflects real-life experiences of recovery, reassurance and survival.

Throughout the function, testimonies illustrated how patients value not only medical expertise but also emotional support. Many described the comfort of knowing their doctors were accessible during critical moments, describing this reassurance as a key part of the healing process.

Ndhlovu explained that effective healthcare extends beyond diagnosis and treatment to include listening, empathy and ongoing support. Doctors were described as central partners in the hospital’s mission to deliver positive outcomes, with patient wellbeing depending on strong collaboration between medical teams and the institution.

The event also acknowledged the demanding nature of the medical profession, noting that doctors frequently work under emotional pressure while caring for patients facing serious illness or uncertain outcomes. Organisers said such realities make recognition initiatives important in sustaining morale and reaffirming professional purpose.

Among those recognized were several doctors whose work had left lasting impressions on patients. Some spouses accepted awards on behalf of the doctors who were unable to attend due to their demanding duties, reflecting the reality that many practitioners remain on call even during celebratory occasions. Dr Tapiwa Kusotera who was absent, received praise from a grateful patient who credited timely medical intervention with improving their quality of life.

The ceremony was attended by healthcare stakeholders including the Cimas Health Group CEO Vuli Ndlovu, reinforcing the broader partnership required to deliver quality healthcare services.

The Avenues Clinic executive said that the decision to prioritize patient narratives over formal speeches offered valuable insight into what matters most to those receiving care. According to feedback shared during the event, patients rarely focused on technical procedures, instead highlighting kindness, reassurance and the sense of being supported during vulnerable moments.

Beyond honouring individual doctors, the gathering provided an opportunity for hospital staff to step away from demanding routines and celebrate shared achievements. She described the occasion as a reminder that healthcare is not only about treating illness but also about restoring hope and dignity.

“We maintain a commitment to strengthening patient-centred care, noting that appreciation initiatives will remain an important part of recognizing the people behind life-saving work,” said Ndhlovu.
