Three professionals from The Avenues Clinic, specialist physician Dr. Tapiwa Kusotera, neurosurgeon Dr. Nyamapfeni, and chief finance officer Mr. Peddy Chigunduru—shared powerful life lessons with students from Allan Wilson, Harare High, and Mufakose 1 High School during a special Father’s Day mentorship event.
Held at The Avenues Clinic, the event aimed to encourage young men to break free from societal limitations and think long-term about their futures. They hosted high school students from Mufakose High 1, Allan Wilson, and Harare High School.
Dr. Kusotera, who is also pursuing an MBA at the University of Stellenbosch, opened up about his own journey. “If you had told me years ago that I’d be standing here today, I wouldn’t have believed it,” he admitted. “But life isn’t about luck; it’s about the choices you make. You have to defy the odds and back yourself.”
He urged students to resist instant gratification and think ahead. “With AI reshaping industries, you need to ask yourself, will this career still matter in 10 years?”
Mr. Chigunduru, who overcame personal struggles to become CFO, spoke on perseverance. “Life will push you,” he said. “But if you stay disciplined and keep your eyes on the goal, you’ll break through. Where you start doesn’t determine where you end up.”
Dr. Nyamapfeni, the neurosurgeon, focused on mindset and purpose. “When you know why you’re doing something, decisions become clearer,” he explained. “Purpose protects you from distractions and keeps you moving forward.”
All three speakers agreed that real success isn’t about shortcuts or flashy displays but is built on effort, integrity, and vision.
“The most successful people I know, whether doctors, mechanics, or entrepreneurs, are the ones who put in the work,” Dr. Kusotera added.
The Avenues Clinic, which recently underwent refurbishment and boasts state-of-the-art equipment, also treated students and members of the media to a hospital tour. The clinic reiterated its commitment to mentoring youth, saying, “If our stories can help even one student dream bigger, we’ve done our job.”
