Ambassador Almassri Condemns Desecration, Slams Religious Persecution

Palestinian Ambassador Tamer Almassri has strongly condemned what he described as a “shocking act of desecration” following widely circulated footage allegedly showing an Israeli soldier destroying a statue of Jesus Christ in Lebanon.

In a statement released this week, Almassri said the incident reflects what he termed a broader pattern of religious intolerance and persecution, particularly affecting Christian and Muslim communities in Palestinian territories. He argued that such acts go beyond isolated misconduct and instead point to “deep-rooted hostility” that threatens the sanctity of religious coexistence in the region.

The ambassador linked the incident to ongoing tensions in key religious sites, including Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza Strip, where access to places of worship has frequently been contested. He warned that recent developments signal a shift away from longstanding arrangements that have historically governed shared religious spaces.

Almassri also referenced events during major Christian observances, including Orthodox Easter and Holy Saturday, where Palestinian worshippers reportedly faced restrictions while attempting to access the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. According to the statement, these incidents underscore growing concerns over limitations on freedom of worship.

Further tensions were highlighted at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, one of Islam’s holiest sites, where Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has previously drawn criticism over visits and actions viewed by some as provocative. Almassri described such developments as part of a wider effort to assert control over religious sites, a claim that Israeli authorities have historically disputed, maintaining that they uphold security and access for all faiths.

The ambassador cautioned that continued tensions risk undermining the delicate balance that has long governed religious coexistence in the Holy Land. He stressed that any erosion of these arrangements could have far-reaching implications for regional stability and interfaith relations.

Amid the controversy, Almassri expressed appreciation for international solidarity, particularly from Zimbabwean religious leaders. He singled out Andby Makururu for his outspoken support, describing it as a “beacon of moral clarity” in the face of ongoing conflict.

The remarks come at a time of heightened scrutiny over religious freedoms in conflict zones, with global observers continuing to call for restraint, dialogue, and respect for sacred sites.
