The 13th Edition of the Diplomat of the Year Awards, hosted by the Diplomat Business Networking Club and Diplomat Media, celebrated outstanding diplomatic achievements while spotlighting financial inclusion as a driver of sustainable development. The event, graced by diplomats, business leaders, and government officials, underscored the importance of empowering women through inclusive financial services.
Delivering the keynote address, Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe Chairman Muchakanakirwa Mukanganwi reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion, particularly for women. This year’s theme, “Financial Inclusion: Empowering Women, Removing Barriers, and Driving Sustainable Development,” aligned with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy, the African Union’s development agenda, and the broader UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In his remarks, Mukanganwi emphasized that financial inclusion is a transformative tool for economic growth and poverty reduction. Despite progress, millions of women worldwide remain unbanked, limiting their economic opportunities. He stressed the need to remove systemic barriers to financial access, enabling women to invest in their families, start businesses, and contribute to national development.
“When women have access to financial services, they create jobs, uplift communities, and drive economic resilience. Yet, many still face challenges in accessing credit and banking services. We must work collectively to break these barriers and ensure financial systems are inclusive for all,” he stated.
Stanbic Bank has been at the forefront of financial inclusion efforts. The bank recently partnered with the European Investment Bank (EIB Global) on a €20 million (US$21.2 million) credit facility aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, with a focus on women-led businesses. This initiative aligns with Stanbic’s broader strategy to drive economic participation among underrepresented groups.
Additionally, the bank operates financial literacy programs, such as its Incubator Hub and Financial Fitness workshops, which equip entrepreneurs—particularly women—with essential financial management skills. Recognized for its commitment, Stanbic Bank was honored with the Overall Winner SME Financial Services Award and Financial Institution Supporting MSMEs Award by the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce.
As part of its gender inclusivity drive, 45% of Stanbic’s workforce comprises women, with 40% representation at the management level. The bank is also an active participant in the HeForShe initiative, advocating for gender equality in the corporate space.
Stanbic Bank’s commitment extends beyond financial services. The institution has played a pivotal role in supporting healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability.
In the healthcare sector, the bank donated USD 80,000 worth of autoclaves to major hospitals, funded a USD 100,000 refurbishment of Harare Children’s Hospital, and sponsored 100 hernia surgeries for underprivileged children.
In education, Stanbic expanded its bursary program at Africa University, supporting future leaders in Zimbabwe.
For environmental sustainability, the bank contributed USD 10,000 to Friends of the Environment, reinforcing its dedication to conservation efforts.
The Diplomat of the Year Awards continue to be a platform for fostering strong diplomatic ties in Zimbabwe and beyond. Diplomats from diverse backgrounds came together in unity, recognizing the role of diplomacy in global economic development.
Mukanganwi congratulated the honorees and reaffirmed Stanbic Bank’s dedication to growth, inclusion, and global partnerships.
“Zimbabwe is our home, and we drive her growth. Together, we will continue to break barriers and create opportunities for all,” he concluded.
