To strengthen cultural ties between the U.S. and Zimbabwe, U.S. Deputy Ambassador Elaine French will launch Portrait of Zimbabwe / Mifananidzo yeZimbabwe, a photo exhibition showcasing Zimbabwe’s people and traditions. The event starts on Thursday, May 29, at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and will run until August 10.
The exhibition, organized by U.S. scholar Dr. Jennifer Kyker, features over 60 photos by well-known Zimbabwean photographer Chicago Dzviti. His pictures capture everyday life, important events, and famous Zimbabweans, telling the story of the country’s culture.
Commenting on the exhibition French said, “Art brings people together. This exhibition doesn’t just show photos, it also helps us to understand each other’s lives and shared dreams.”
The U.S. Embassy hopes the event will support Zimbabwe’s artists and encourage cultural exchange. Dr. Kyker, who studies Zimbabwean music and identity, called the exhibition “a tribute to Zimbabwe’s strength, creativity, and daily life.”
Dzviti, who has photographed Zimbabwe for many years, said the pictures tell the country’s big and small stories.
The opening night will host diplomats, government leaders, artists, and cultural experts. The exhibition aims to spark conversations about national identity and how images can shape how the world sees Zimbabwe.
Through projects like this, the U.S. shows that diplomacy is not only about politics, it also happens through art, education, and shared cultural experiences.
