Pumula Arts and Crafts Centre’s dedication to art and social change stands as a shining example of how artists can use their creativity to respond to social issues.

Nestled within the heart of the Pumula community in Bulawayo, the centre offers a platform for dialogue and engagement, ignites a sense of pride in culture and empowers individuals to make a difference.

The founder and director of Pumula Arts and Crafts Centre, Sikhulekile Dube revealed that Pumula Arts and Crafts Centre has initiated several social projects that address pressing issues faced by the community.

“Our mission as Pumula Arts and Crafts Center is to empower communities by harnessing the power of art and culture,” said Dube.

She added, “We believe that through creative expression, we can address social issues and bring about positive change. Our projects aim to bridge generational gaps, prevent social problems, and promote unity among community members.”

One of their flagship projects is the “Exhibeni Youth Festival,” an annual event held during the culture month. The festival aims to revive and promote cultural and heritage values among the youth. It serves as a platform for culturalists, elders, and influential members of the society to engage in open discussions with the younger generation. Topics such as bridging the gap of extended families, early childhood marriages, divorces, gender-based violence (GBV), drug and substance abuse, and school dropouts are addressed. The festival encourages every family member to freely express their views, fostering unity and understanding within the community.

Pumula Arts and Crafts Centre recognises the power of collaboration and partnership. Currently, they are working closely with the Ministry of Youths and the Arts Council.

Dube stressed the importance of seeking additional partnerships with other organisations and churches to expand the impact of their projects. By joining forces with like-minded entities, they aim to create a more significant and sustainable change in the community.

The centre’s influence extends beyond the city limits of Bulawayo. Pumula Arts and Crafts Center has expanded its reach to rural areas, including Lupane, Tsholotsho, Nkayi, Inyathi, and Matopos. Their efforts in these regions focus on promoting fine art, cultural food, and traditional practices. The centre actively engages with local communities, organising workshops and events that showcase the rich cultural heritage of these areas. Through these initiatives, they strive to preserve and celebrate the diverse cultural identities that make up Zimbabwe.
