Through the strokes of a paintbrush, the words of a poet, or the lens of a camera, artists have been challenging norms, questioning stereotypes, and championing the cause of women’s rights.
True to these words by Azmat Malik, youth-led organization, Yellow World, has employed powerful storytelling and thought-provoking narrative to champion gender equality and women empowerment in its recently premiered movie, Tears of a Daughter.
Set against a backdrop of societal prejudices and deep-rooted gender biases, this film sheds light on the resilience and strength of young girls as they strive to break free from the shackles of inequality
In the film, Buhle, played by Laura Ngwenya, faces numerous obstacles and setbacks. She encounters resistance from her own family, cultural norms, and a society that is reluctant to embrace change. However, her indomitable spirit and unwavering determination help her overcome these challenges, inspiring others along the way.
Speaking on theme of the movie, the Executive Producer, Pride Mentor Mujoli, said, Tears of a Daughter is a call to action, urging society to recognize and address the deeply ingrained biases that hinder the progress of the girl child. It highlights the urgent need for equal opportunities, access to education, and the dismantling of patriarchal structures that perpetuate gender inequality. The movie captures the emotional journey of Buhle, evoking empathy and stirring audiences to take a stand against gender-based discrimination.
“The movie is a moving testament of the strength, resilience, and untapped potential of the girl child. Through Buhle’s story, we hope to ignite a spark of empathy and inspire action towards a future where every little girl can dream, achieve, and soar,” he said.
Mujoli added that, the movie is a powerful reflection of youth’s voices, dreams, and aspirations. He said, through storytelling, they aim to inspire and empower the next generation of filmmakers, nurturing their potential and providing them with a platform to showcase their unique perspectives.
Yellow World, founded by a group of passionate young individuals, has been at the forefront of empowering Bulawayo’s youth through various artistic endeavors. The organization aims to provide a platform for young creatives to express themselves, develop their skills, and create positive change in their communities.
