Seed Co Celebrates 85th Anniversary and a Successful Field Day 

Farmers, agricultural experts, and industry stakeholders from the African continent gathered on Thursday, March 5th, at Rattray Research Station in Shamva for the annual Seed Co Field Day and a celebration of their 85th anniversary in business.

Hosted by Pan African seed company Seed Co, the was a crucial platform for showcasing the latest advancements in seed technology, modern farming practices, and research-driven innovations aimed at enhancing food security and agricultural productivity.

The event attracted a large number of participants, including smallholder and commercial farmers, agribusiness professionals, government officials, and researchers. Attendees had the opportunity to tour demonstration plots, engage with Seed Co agronomists, and witness how various hybrid maize, wheat, soybean, and sorghum varieties to name a few, performed under real field conditions.

Discussions focused on climate smart agriculture, with experts emphasizing the need for farmers to adopt drought tolerant, disease-resistant, and high-yielding seed varieties. Practical training sessions covered best practices in soil health management, pest control, and efficient water usage, equipping farmers with knowledge to boost their productivity.

Seed Co Celebrates 85th Anniversary and a Successful Field Day The guests of honor were Group Captain Taveshure, Chief Director in the Minister’s Office and Dr. A.J. Masuka, who delivered the keynote speech on his behalf.

In his address, Dr. Masuka highlighted the government’s commitment to agricultural transformation through research and innovation. He praised Seed Co for its dedication to developing high quality seed varieties that are resilient to climate change, pests, and diseases.

“Agriculture remains the foundation of our economy, and the adoption of scientifically developed seed varieties is critical to ensuring food security,” Dr. Masuka stated. “The government is working closely with research institutions and private-sector partners like Seed Co to provide farmers with the resources they need to thrive.”

He also emphasized the importance of public private partnerships in expanding farmer support programs, improving access to high yield seeds, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Speaking at the event, Morgan Nzwere, Group CEO of Seed Co, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to empowering farmers through research, innovation, and education.

“At Seed Co, our goal since 85 years ago is to provide farmers with cutting-edge seed technology that maximizes yields while withstanding environmental challenges,” Nzwere said. “We continue to invest in research and development to ensure that our seeds meet the needs of farmers across different regions.”

He also encouraged farmers to take advantage of Seed Co’s technical support services, which offer guidance on seed selection, optimal planting methods, and disease prevention strategies.

Farmers who have adopted Seed Co hybrid varieties shared their experiences, with many expressing satisfaction over increased yields and improved resilience to drought and disease.

“Ever since I switched to Seed Co’s hybrid maize, my production has doubled, even in difficult weather conditions,” said one farmer from Shamva.

The demonstration plots at Rattray Research Station showcased various high yielding maize, wheat, and soybean varieties, allowing farmers to witness firsthand the benefits of adopting improved seed technologies.

The Field Day proved to be a valuable event for Zimbabwe’s farming community, offering insights into the latest seed innovations and sustainable agricultural practices. With expert presentations, on-site demonstrations, and interactive sessions, farmers left the event better prepared to enhance productivity and tackle climate-related challenges.

As Zimbabwe continues to modernize its agricultural sector, Seed Co remains a key player, ensuring that farmers have access to the best seed technolog to drive national food security and economic growth.
