On Friday morning, Danhiko Project marked World Egg Day with a vibrant celebration made possible by a generous donation from poultry company Irvine’s. The long-standing welfare organisation received 3,600 eggs and 100 kilograms of chicken, a contribution aimed at improving nutrition for its learners and residents.

Danhiko Director Dr. Witness Magulula expressed gratitude to Irvine’s, the Board of Trustees, staff, and learners, noting that the occasion represented more than a simple donation. “Today is a renewal of hope, community, and purpose,” he said. “Life is an egg-cellent adventure.” His remarks captured both the light-hearted and symbolic spirit of the day.

The ceremony was attended by Danhiko’s Vice Chairperson, Ms. Margaret Mbizvo, who accepted the donation on behalf of the institution. Irvine’s was represented by several executives, including Mr. Rob Armstrong (Technical, Sales and Operations Director), Mr. Donovan Sucks (Live Production Director), Ms. Joyce Machigere (Commercial Executive), Mr. Phil Mushosho (Chief Finance Officer), and Mr. Wilfred Marerwa (Sales Executive). Also present were Mr. Tawanda Musariri, the School Head, and Mrs. Letiwe Dube, Vice Principal. Their collaboration reflected the strong partnership between Danhiko and Irvine’s.

Danhiko Project was founded in 1981 by the Society of Friends for Danhiko, shortly after Zimbabwe’s independence. Initially established to rehabilitate and educate ex-combatants who had been injured during the liberation struggle, the institution expanded its mandate to include young Zimbabweans with physical and sensory disabilities, as well as those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The project now provides academic, vocational, and rehabilitation services in an inclusive setting where able-bodied and disabled learners study side by side.

Over the years, Danhiko has grown to include a secondary school, an industrial training college, a rehabilitation centre, a clinic, and small production units. The organisation is also known for hosting the annual Danhiko Paralympic Games, a national competition for athletes with disabilities. Its staff remain dedicated to equipping learners with academic and practical skills that promote independence and dignity.

World Egg Day, celebrated globally on the second Friday of October, highlights the nutritional importance of eggs as an affordable and high-quality source of protein. Irvine’s has supported Danhiko for more than a decade through weekly donations of eggs and chicken, reinforcing its commitment to community partnerships.

Speaking at the event, Irvine’s Sales Executive Wilfred Marerwa said eggs unite communities and strengthen food systems from farmers to consumers. Ms. Mbizvo expressed appreciation for Irvine’s ongoing support, noting the positive impact on learners’ health and morale. Learners performed songs, poems, and traditional dances to show their gratitude, and a surprise appearance by guest artist Nutty O added to the day’s excitement.

The event underscored Danhiko’s continuing relevance as a model for inclusive education and skills development. As the country faces economic and social challenges, partnerships like the one between Irvine’s and Danhiko are examples of how collective action can nurture resilience, hope, and opportunity within communities.
