To encourage safer and more inclusive transportation in the capital, the City of Harare organized a lively Open Streets event in Newlands on Saturday, March 1, 2025, in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy and other neighborhood organizations.
The event, themed ‘On Your Bike!’, transformed the streets into a car-free zone, encouraging alternative modes of transport such as cycling, skating, walking, and jogging.
The campaign, which promoted sustainable urban mobility, involved residents, community groups, and organizations such as Manica Bikes, Road Safe, Green & Clean, Buffalo Bicycles, Zimbabwe Bikes, and Cali Graph.
Brian Zvomuya, the city’s Acting Chief Traffic and Transportation Planner, emphasized the significance of these kind of events in transforming Harare into a city that is more welcoming to cyclists and pedestrians.
“Harare Open Street events promote transport modes that are not only safe but also cost-effective, such as cycling and walking. These initiatives enhance social interaction, inclusivity, and a sense of community,” said Zvomuya.
The day was packed with diverse activities, including cycling, skating, jogging, dancing, book-sharing, environmental care projects, and street art. Residents of all ages joined in, enjoying the transformed streets while advocating for safer and more accessible urban spaces.
The Open Streets initiative aligns with global efforts to make cities more livable by reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and fostering community engagement. By encouraging alternative transport, Harare aims to reduce reliance on cars and promote healthier, more connected neighborhoods.
With the success of this event, stakeholders are optimistic that similar initiatives will continue, ensuring that Harare remains on track toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.
