The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) has lifted the partial suspension on Gabon, restoring the country to full membership within the organization. This decision follows the country’s presidential election, which was deemed “credible, transparent, and inclusive” by the Commonwealth Observer Group.

According to the CMAG’s concluding statement, “The Group reflected on the Report of the Commonwealth Observer Group and noted the conclusion that the election largely reflected the will of the people who voted.” The CMAG also acknowledged Gabon’s continued membership in other regional and international organizations and its return to full membership in some cases after the election.

While welcoming Gabon’s return to constitutional democracy, the CMAG “firmly reiterated its strong condemnation of any unconstitutional overthrow of a duly elected government,” emphasizing that such actions violate the democratic principles at the heart of the Commonwealth and breach the Commonwealth Charter.

As a result of the decision, Gabon is now fully reinstated as a member of the Commonwealth, allowing it to participate in all organizational activities. The country will remain on the CMAG’s agenda as it continues to work towards fulfilling its obligations under the Commonwealth Charter. The CMAG has also encouraged the Government of Gabon to access technical support from the Commonwealth to promote peace, democratic stability, and good governance. Furthermore, the Commonwealth Secretary-General has been requested to remain engaged with Gabon, supporting the country’s efforts to strengthen policies that promote the rule of law, separation of powers, constitutionalism, and good governance.

The Gabonese government has expressed gratitude for the Commonwealth’s support throughout this process. This development marks a significant step forward for Gabon, reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles and international cooperation.
