The Embassy of the State of Palestine, in partnership with the Women Writers Support Network  Africa, commemorated the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Friday, November 29, 2024. The gathering, hosted at the Palestine Embassy, brought together activists, artists, and public figures in a united demonstration of support for the Palestinian cause.

The event, held between 10:00 am and 11:00 am, highlighted the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people for freedom and self-determination. It began with a touching poem by Catherine Murombedzi, performed by poet Lovejoy, setting a reflective and poignant atmosphere.

Ambassador Tamer Almassri expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Zimbabweans who continue to stand in solidarity with Palestine.

Matida Chasi delivered a compelling speech, drawing parallels between the struggles of oppressed peoples and emphasizing the importance of global unity. Her father, Fortune Chasi, a well-known public figure, also attended, lending his voice in support.

Adding a musical element, celebrated local musician Pax Gomo collaborated with fellow artists to create songs dedicated to Palestine’s freedom. Gomo performed an emotive piece blending music and spoken word poetry, vividly portraying the hardships faced by Palestinians and their fight for liberation from oppression.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, established by the United Nations in 1977, is observed annually on November 29. This date commemorates the 1947 UN General Assembly adoption of Resolution 181, which proposed the partition of Palestine. The day serves as a global reminder of the Palestinian people’s ongoing challenges and a call for justice and peace.

The event underscored the deep ties between Zimbabwe and Palestine, rooted in shared histories of resistance against colonialism and apartheid. Speakers urged the international community to strengthen efforts toward ending occupation and achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

As the comemoration concluded, attendees pledged to continue advocating for Palestinian rights through art, literature, and activism, reaffirming the power of collective action in the pursuit of justice.
