On Friday, November 22, the Harare International School auditorium came alive with the vibrant sounds of Qawwali, a traditional form of Sufi Islamic devotional music. This captivating evening, organized by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in collaboration with the Pakistan-Zimbabwe Friendship Organization, aimed to strengthen cultural ties while introducing Zimbabweans to the profound heritage of Qawwali.

Zandile Zaza Ndlovu, speaking on behalf of the Ambassador of Pakistan, H.E. Murad Baseer, and Madam Nadia Abbasi, opened the event by describing it as a tribute to art, spirituality, and culture.

“Qawwali is a spiritual form of devotional singing originating in South Asia, deeply rooted in the 13th century. It blends Persian, Arabic, and Indian musical influences to create a transcendent experience through rhythm, poetry, and melody,” Ndlovu explained during her address.

The evening’s highlight was a performance by the legendary Ustad Ali Hafeez Khan, a maestro in classical, ghazal, and Qawwali music, whose career spans over five decades. He was accompanied by his son and co-performer Arfeen, who played the harmonium, and his nephew Zilqarnain, a skilled tabla player.

Together, the trio delivered an electrifying performance that showcased Qawwali’s rich rhythmic and lyrical traditions, immersing the audience in the Sufi music’s spiritual essence.

As the final harmonium notes resonated through the auditorium, a standing ovation confirmed the night’s success as more than a concert—it was a celebration of cultural connection through the universal language of music.

What is Qawwali?

Qawwali, derived from the Arabic term ‘Qaul’ meaning “declaration,” involves group performances led by a Qawwal, accompanied by harmonium, tabla, and rhythmic clapping. It originated in the shrines of Sufi saints and is known for its power to evoke deep spiritual emotions and transcendence.

This successful event highlighted the role of cultural diplomacy in fostering global connections, leaving the audience eager for more such enriching experiences.
