For many families, accessing basic healthcare meant hours of travel and lost income. Today, that narrative is steadily changing, thanks to a groundbreaking telemedicine initiative championed by Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa.
At the centre of this transformation is the telemedicine virtual hospital programme which is an ambitious, people-centred solution that leverages technology to bridge the healthcare gap between urban and rural Zimbabwe. Spearheaded by the First Lady in her capacity as Patron of SHE Tech, the initiative blends digital innovation with grassroots healthcare delivery, ensuring that no Zimbabwean is left behind.
The programme marked a historic milestone with the launch of the first telemedicine virtual hospital at Precabe Farm in Kwekwe, officiated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. This event signalled Zimbabwe’s decisive step into the era of digitally enabled healthcare. Shortly thereafter, another key site was commissioned in Chiweshe at Kakora Maria Theresa, with Dr Mnangagwa personally presiding over the ceremony. The occasion brought together senior government officials, including Barbara Rwodzi and Tatenda Mavetera, alongside industry leaders and development partners.
These launches were more than symbolic as they represented a unified national commitment to transforming healthcare access. What began as a visionary concept has rapidly expanded into a nationwide movement, with nearly 40 telemedicine sites now operational across the country. Strategic partnerships with NetOne and ZimSmart Villages have been instrumental in ensuring reliable connectivity and seamless service delivery.
Through this initiative, patients in remote areas can now access virtual consultations, receive timely medical advice, and benefit from critical health services without travelling long distances. Importantly, technology is not replacing human interaction—it is enhancing it, enabling faster responses and more efficient care.
A key pillar of the programme is its emphasis on prevention and community empowerment. Trained community health promoters, known as Vadhumeni veUtano, play a vital role in delivering basic health services such as blood pressure monitoring and diabetes screening. By identifying risks early and promoting health awareness, they are helping to build a culture of proactive wellness across communities.
Beyond healthcare, the initiative is also fostering economic inclusion. By integrating mobile financial services into the system, communities are gaining access to digital tools that support livelihoods and financial independence. This holistic approach aligns with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 agenda, which seeks to create an upper middle-income economy driven by innovation and inclusivity.
